Stability or Change?

Sometimes I can’t help but grow suspicious when my life is too orderly. There’s that nagging feeling that prevents me from accepting that life, at least in my own context, might actually be perfect. Most of us craves for stability and views disarray as an enemy. Personally, I have never was a fan of change. I’d rather eat the same cup of pudding everyday than to risk eating another brand only to get disappointed. When I was younger I lived my life under the pretense that unfamiliar things were enemies, that consistency was my friend. And boy, I could never have been more wrong.

I know most of us want to live a well ordered life, a life with a time table, a life fueled by an uncompromising dream. At a young age we are exposed to the notion of a step by step process to attain happiness, and most of us cling to this sense of stability and constancy, to the point that any deviation from it is almost viewed as a sin towards oneself. We are led to believe that betraying our plans is the same as betraying ourselves.Well I guess it is true that if someone can actually live up to their plans without any hint of compromise, you’ll actually achieve your goals. But is it still what you want by the time you achieve it?  Every single one of us dreamed to be a doctor or lawyer at one point in our lives, but how many among us will live up to that dream if given the chance? How many among us still actually wants to be a lawyer or a doctor?  Life is constantly at a state of flux as Heraclitus stated, we are forever changing, everything is constantly at motion. In fact, even death is nothing but a manifestation of change. Everything is constantly changing, and it would be a grave mistake to not take these changes into account when figuring out how we want to live our lives.

Slowly I’m finally learning to embrace the chaos and disarray that comes with life. Sometimes it really is better to let go and dance with the groove rather than stand perfectly still and stable in the middle of the dance floor that is life. And just like in a club, there are times when you’ll be dancing with the flow of the music, and there are also times when you need to find a place to stay still and gather your thoughts before you dive back into the floor.
